Simulation Consolidated Drained (CD) Triaxial Test Abaqus

This example been chosen from Example 5.6 Sam Helwany book

In this example , we simulate the consolidated–drained (CD) triaxial test in Abaqus software

The soil has been considered in form of a cylindrical shape with a diameter of 5 cm and height of 5 cm

The triaxial test is done in two steps , in the first step the soil is subjected to a uniform confining pressure from all sides and in the second step , a vertical load is applied to the soil until failure

In first step the confining pressure of 210 kPa is applied at the top surface and the right side of the soil

Second step is the shearing step with duration of 10e9 seconds

This example is modeled on drainage conditions, so the loading rate must be very low , and a long time period should be considered for it

The top and bottom surface of the soil is permeable and the possibility of drainage from these surfaces will be provided

We intend to draw axial strain versus deviator stress diagram

We intend to draw axial strain versus volumetric strain diagram

The volumetric strain is equal to ; strain in X direction plus strain in Y direction plus strain in Z direction
