Comparison between stress within the single-layer soil and multi-layer soil Abaqus

This example been chosen from Example 3.7 Sam Helwany book

In this example, we intend to simulate the vertical stress in a multi-layer soil and single-layer soil caused by a circular loading in the Abaqus software

The geometric shape of soil has been considered in form of a cylinder with a height of 50 m and diameter of 100 m

The loading area is a circle and a pressure equal to 10 K Pascal is applied to it

By comparing these two diagrams , the effect of Asphalt layer and the Base layer will be observed clearly

The Asphalt layer and the Base layer absorb the damaging stress and only a small fraction of this stress will be transferred to the sub-base layer and the softer soil layer

Actually , the Asphalt layer will act as a shield , protecting the softer layers against the stress due to repeated traffic loads
