Seismic analysis of a concrete gravity dam with Water reservoir and foundation ABAQUS

 In this example we intend to simulate the earthquake of concrete dam in interaction with water reservoir and the foundation in the Abaqus software  

 We use the concrete damaged plasticity material model for dam , Acoustic property as Bulk Modulus for water

Far-field conditions on the bottom and right-hand-side boundaries and left-hand-side boundaries are modeled by infinite elements , element type CINPE4

The far field is modeled with CINPE4 infinite elements

In this example we use three steps , first step for the gravity load , second step for the hydrostatic pressure and For the dynamic analysis in the third step the transverse components of the ground accelerations are applied to all nodes at the base of  the dam

 The earthquake duration is 10 seconds

Prior to the earthquake excitation, the dam is subjected to gravity loading due to its self-weight and to the hydrostatic pressure of the reservoir on the upstream wall

 For simulation water we use Acoustic elements AC2D

 the infinite elements have been marked in blue and finite elements in yellow

The infinite elements have been utilized in order to propagate the waves out of the foundation and for nonreflecting of them

 you observe acoustic pressure in this figure

In this example we create boundary condition for leading the compressive waves out of the Acoustic space and nonreflecting of them into that place , To do so , we use Acoustic impedance 

you observe tensile damage of the concrete dam in this figure
