Product Overview

In this project, the welded unreinforced flange-welded web (WUF-W) beam-to-column connection is modeled in Abaqus and its seismic behavior under cyclic loading is investigated.

The numerical model is developed based on an experimental study reported in the reference paper. The Abaqus results are compared with the experimental results to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical model and its ability to reproduce the behavior of the tested connection.

In this project, the DC-M specimen is modeled in Abaqus based on the experimental test.

Model Description

The model represents a welded unreinforced flange-welded web (WUF-W) connection between a beam and a column.

The model includes the beam, box column, shear plate, and continuity plates. The beam flanges are connected to the column flange using groove welds, while the beam web is connected through the shear plate.

Continuity plates are provided inside the box column to improve the local behavior of the column at the beam-column connection.

Cyclic Loading

A cyclic loading is applied to the top of the beam to investigate the seismic behavior of the WUF-W connection.

The loading history is defined using the Amplitude option in Abaqus according to the loading protocol used in the experimental study.

The connection is subjected to repeated loading and unloading cycles, and its response is recorded throughout the nonlinear analysis.

Hysteresis Response

The numerical results are extracted from the Abaqus analysis to obtain the force–Drift hysteresis diagram of the connection.

The obtained hysteresis response is compared with the experimental results reported in the reference paper to evaluate the ability of the numerical model to reproduce the cyclic behavior of the connection.

Deformation Under Cyclic Loading

As the cyclic loading increases, the plastic deformation develops mainly in the beam, while the panel zone remains largely elastic.

At higher levels of cyclic deformation, local buckling develops in the beam flanges and web. These local deformations become more pronounced as the story drift increases and are associated with the development of the plastic response in the beam.

Experimental Validation

The numerical results obtained from Abaqus are compared with the experimental results reported in the reference research paper.

The comparison focuses on the hysteresis response and deformation behavior of the WUF-W connection under cyclic loading.

The numerical results show good agreement with the experimental results, demonstrating that the Abaqus model can reproduce the main structural response observed in the experimental study.
