Product Overview
In this project, the static behavior of a bolted end-plate joint is simulated in the Abaqus software.
The numerical model is based on the experimental configuration reported in the reference study and includes the main components of the joint, including the beam, column, extended end plate, bolts, and stiffener plates.
The connection is subjected to vertical static loading to investigate its force–displacement response and deformation behavior. The Abaqus results are compared with the experimental results reported in the research paper.
Model Description
The connection consists of an HEA 180 beam connected to an HEB 220 column through an extended end plate. The model also includes the bolts and stiffener plates used in the experimental specimen.
The end plate is welded to the beam, while the connection between the end plate and the column flange is provided by high-strength bolted assemblies. A stiffener plate is also provided in the compression region of the column to reduce local deformation of the column web.
The numerical model is developed according to the configuration of the experimental specimen reported in the reference article.
Static Loading
A vertical static load is applied to the top of the column while the beam ends are supported. This loading configuration produces deformation in the beam-to-column joints and allows the static response of the bolted end-plate connection to be investigated.
Force–Displacement Diagram
The force–displacement diagram obtained from the Abaqus software is compared with the experimental results.
As you observe, there is a good conformity between the Abaqus results and the experimental results reported in the article.
Deformation of the Model
As the load increases, plastic deformation develops in the end plate around the bolted connection. The deformation gradually increases with the applied load and contributes to the development of the yielding mechanism of the joint.
The deformation of the end plate is an important part of the connection response, as the plate undergoes bending and develops plastic yielding mechanisms before the final failure of the connection.
Validation
This project has been validated by comparing the results obtained from Abaqus with the results reported in the reference article.
The good agreement between the numerical and experimental results demonstrates that the Abaqus model can reproduce the static behavior of the bolted end-plate joint.
