Project Overview

In this Abaqus tutorial, the sliding failure mode of a masonry wall is simulated and investigated.

The main objective of this simulation is to identify the failure mode of the masonry wall and investigate the development of sliding between the brick rows during the analysis.

Updated Version of the Previous Model

This tutorial is an updated analysis of a previous masonry wall "Simplified Masonry Wall Under in-plane cyclic Loading using simplified Micro".

The purpose of the updated analysis is to investigate the failure behavior of the masonry wall in greater detail and determine which failure mode develops during the simulation.

Failure Mode

As you can observe in the results, the main failure mode of the masonry wall is sliding failure.

Sliding occurs between the first and second rows of bricks. During the analysis, the second row starts to slide over the first row, producing the characteristic sliding failure mode.

Sliding Behavior

The relative movement between the brick rows becomes more pronounced as the analysis progresses.

The interaction between the masonry units allows the development of relative displacement along the mortar joint, resulting in sliding of the upper brick row over the row below it.

Damage in Bricks

In addition to the sliding failure, damage also develops in the brick units during the analysis.

The damage pattern can be observed in the Abaqus results and provides additional information about the response and failure behavior of the masonry wall.

Failure Mode Identification

One of the main purposes of this tutorial is to identify the actual failure mode of the masonry wall from the Abaqus results.

By examining the deformation and damage patterns, the characteristic sliding failure between the first and second rows of bricks can be clearly identified.
