Project Overview

In this Abaqus tutorial, a masonry infill wall is modeled inside a steel frame and analyzed under vertical loading and horizontal displacement.

The main objective of this simulation is to investigate the behavior of the masonry infill wall and the effect of the surrounding steel frame on its response and failure.

Masonry Infill Wall

The masonry wall is located inside the steel frame. The wall consists of individual bricks connected to each other through mortar.

The connection between the bricks and the connection between the masonry wall and the steel frame are represented using mortar interaction.

Micro Approach

The masonry wall is modeled using the Simplified Micro Approach.

In this approach, the bricks are modeled individually, while the mortar is not modeled as a separate solid part. Instead, the mechanical behavior of the mortar is introduced through an Interaction Property assigned to the interaction surfaces between the bricks.

The interaction property includes Cohesive Behavior, Damage, and Damage Evolution to represent the behavior and degradation of the mortar joints.

Steel Frame

The surrounding steel frame consists of two steel columns, one steel beam, and one plate.

The steel frame provides additional restraint to the masonry infill wall and affects its response under the applied loading.

Connection between Masonry and Steel Frame

The connection between the masonry infill wall and the surrounding steel frame is simulated using mortar interaction.

This interaction allows the behavior of the interface between the masonry wall and the steel frame to be considered during the analysis.

Loading Conditions

The masonry infill wall and steel frame system undergoes a vertical load followed by a horizontal displacement.

The applied loading produces deformation in the masonry wall and allows its behavior and failure response to be investigated.

Effect of the Steel Frame

The steel frame provides additional restraint to the masonry wall and helps prevent excessive deformation and failure.

The results demonstrate that the presence of the steel frame can significantly affect the behavior of the masonry infill wall and help prevent the bricks from completely separating from one another.

Comparison of Masonry Wall Behavior

The behavior of the masonry wall is compared with and without the restraining effect of the steel frame.

Without the steel frame, the bricks can become separated and the masonry wall can experience significant damage. In the presence of the steel frame, the wall is better restrained and the separation of the bricks is reduced.
