Product Overview

In this project, a stainless steel bolted stiffened extended end-plate (BSEP) beam-to-column joint is modeled using the Abaqus software and its behavior under cyclic loading is investigated.

The beam is connected to an extended end plate, which is bolted to the column flange using M20 bolts. Both the column flange and the extended end plate are reinforced with stiffeners.

The numerical model is developed based on an experimental study reported in the reference paper. The Abaqus results are compared with the experimental results to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical model and its ability to reproduce the behavior of the tested connection.

In this project, the JC4 specimen is modeled in Abaqus based on the experimental test.

Model Description

The main structural components include the column, beam, extended end plate, bolts, stiffener, and three-angular stiffener.

The connection components within the connection region are made of S31608 (EN 1.4401) stainless steel, while the remaining part of the column is made of Q345 carbon steel.

The geometry and configuration of the connection are defined according to the information provided in the reference experimental study. The required material properties, interactions, boundary conditions, and analysis settings are defined in Abaqus.

Analysis Steps

The analysis is performed in two main stages. In the first stage, bolt pretension is applied to the M20 bolts using the Bolt Load feature in Abaqus to create an initial tensile force in the bolts and clamp the connected components together. Separately, a 485 kN axial load is applied to the column to represent the axial force acting on the column during the experiment.

In the second stage, the bolt pretension and axial load are maintained while cyclic displacement loading is applied to the beam end according to the loading protocol of the experimental JC4 specimen.

Cyclic Loading

A cyclic loading is applied to the end of the beam to investigate the seismic behavior of the extended end-plate joint.

The loading history is defined using the Amplitude option in Abaqus based on the loading protocol used in the experimental study.

The response of the joint during the loading and unloading cycles is recorded to evaluate its hysteretic behavior.

Results and Hysteresis Response

The Abaqus results are extracted and processed to evaluate the structural response of the stainless steel bolted extended end-plate joint under cyclic loading.

The force–displacement hysteresis diagram obtained from the Abaqus analysis is compared with the experimental results reported in the reference article.

The comparison shows that the numerical model is able to reproduce the main characteristics of the experimental response.

Deformation Under Cyclic Loading

The deformation of the joint increases as the cyclic displacement increases. In the JC4 specimen, the extended end plate starts to deform plastically at higher displacement levels, and its plastic deformation increases with further cyclic loading.

Experimental Validation

The numerical results obtained from Abaqus are compared with the experimental results reported in the reference research paper.

The comparison focuses on the hysteretic response and overall structural behavior of the stainless steel bolted extended end-plate joint under seismic loading.

The Abaqus results show good agreement with the experimental results, demonstrating that the numerical model can reproduce the behavior observed in the experimental study.
