Project Overview
In this Abaqus project, the deflection of a mechanical system is calculated using both Abaqus and an analytical solution. The results obtained from the numerical simulation are then compared with the analytical results.
The model consists of Link AB, Link CD, and Bar BDE. These components are connected together using pins.
Mechanical model used for calculating deflection.
Model Geometry and Materials
The length of Link AB is 0.3 m, while the length of Link CD is 0.4 m. The length of Bar BDE is 0.6 m.
Link AB is made of Aluminum, while Link CD is made of Steel. Bar BDE is modeled as a rigid body.
Applied Load
A force of 30 kN is applied to point E. The applied load produces deformation and deflection in the connected members.
Deflection at Points B, D, and E
The main objective of the analysis is to determine the deflection of points B, D, and E using Abaqus and the analytical solution.
Deformation and deflection obtained from the Abaqus analysis.
Abaqus Results
The deflection of point B obtained from the Abaqus simulation is 0.5147 mm.
The deflection of point D obtained from the Abaqus simulation is 0.29999 mm.
The deflection of point E obtained from the Abaqus simulation is 1.946 mm.
Deflection obtained at point B.
Deflection obtained at point D.
Deflection obtained at point E.
Analytical Solution
The deflection of points B, D, and E is also calculated using an analytical solution.
The analytical calculation is based on the geometry, material properties, applied load, and the mechanical behavior of the connected members. The deformation of Link AB and Link CD is determined first, and the resulting displacements are used to calculate the deflection at points B, D, and E.
Since Bar BDE is modeled as a rigid body, its deformation is neglected. The displacement of point E is therefore determined from the rigid-body motion of Bar BDE based on the displacement of its connected points.
The analytical solution gives the following deflection values:
- Point B: 0.514 mm
- Point D: 0.300 mm
- Point E: 1.928 mm
These values are used as the reference results for comparison with the corresponding Abaqus results.
Comparison between the Abaqus results and the analytical solution.
Comparison with Analytical Solution
The deflection values obtained from Abaqus are compared with the corresponding values from the analytical solution.
As observed from the results, the Abaqus results are in close agreement with the analytical solution. This comparison demonstrates that the numerical model can accurately reproduce the expected deformation behavior of the system.
