Product Overview
In this project, a Low-Yield-Point (LYP) steel plate shear wall with horizontal and vertical stiffeners is modeled and simulated in Abaqus under cyclic loading. The numerical model is developed based on the experimental study of a high load-bearing capacity steel plate shear wall.
The model includes a LY225 shear web plate, horizontal and vertical stiffeners, flange plates, and connection plates. The nonlinear cyclic response obtained from the Abaqus analysis is compared with the experimental results reported in the reference study.
Model Description
The model represents the LSPSW1 specimen, a Low-Yield-Point (LYP) steel plate shear wall developed for high load-bearing capacity and subjected to cyclic loading. The model is developed and simulated in Abaqus based on the experimental specimen reported in the reference study.
The shear web plate is modeled using LY225 steel, while the stiffeners, flange plates, and connection plates are modeled using Q345B steel. The structural components are modeled using shell elements in Abaqus.
In this project, the LSPSW1 specimen is modeled in Abaqus based on the experimental test.
Buckling Analysis and Initial Imperfection
A buckling analysis is first performed to investigate the buckling behavior of the steel plate shear wall.
The buckling analysis makes it possible to identify the regions where instability occurs in the shear wall. The numerical results show that buckling develops particularly around the four corners of the steel shear wall, which is consistent with the behavior reported in the reference study.
Cyclic Loading
After the buckling analysis, the steel plate shear wall is subjected to cyclic loading to investigate its nonlinear structural response.
The LSPSW1 model is subjected to displacement-controlled cyclic loading in Abaqus following the loading protocol used in the experimental test. The horizontal displacement is applied at the top of the model through repeated loading cycles.
Results and Hysteresis Response
The Abaqus results are extracted and processed to evaluate the response of the steel plate shear wall under cyclic loading.
The force–displacement hysteresis curve obtained from the numerical analysis is compared with the corresponding results reported in the reference study.
The numerical results show that the Abaqus model can reproduce the main characteristics of the cyclic response of the LYP steel plate shear wall.
Deformation Under Cyclic Loading
The deformation pattern of the steel plate shear wall is investigated during the cyclic analysis. The Abaqus results show the deformation and buckling behavior of the shear web plate under repeated loading.
Experimental Validation
The numerical results are compared with the results reported in the reference research paper.
The comparison focuses on the force–displacement hysteresis response and the overall structural behavior of the shear wall. The numerical results show good agreement with the results reported in the reference study.
