Product Overview

In this project, a stainless steel plate shear wall is modeled in Abaqus and its behavior under low cyclic loading is investigated.

The numerical model is developed based on the experimental specimen reported in the reference study. The SW-6 specimen consists of a stainless steel plate with peripheral stiffeners and does not include diagonal stiffeners. The steel plate is made of S30408 stainless steel.

The Abaqus results are compared with the experimental results of the SW-6 specimen to evaluate the numerical model and its ability to reproduce the observed cyclic response and structural behavior.

Model Description

The model represents a stainless steel plate shear wall based on the configuration of the experimental specimen reported in the reference research study.

The model consists of a stainless steel plate, peripheral stiffeners, end stiffeners, normal stiffeners, and connection plates. The steel components are modeled using S4R shell elements.

The geometry, material properties, interactions, boundary conditions, and analysis settings are defined in Abaqus to reproduce the structural configuration and loading conditions of the experimental specimen.

Buckling Analysis and Initial Imperfection

The first stage of the analysis consists of a buckling analysis of the steel shear wall.

The buckling mode is obtained from the Abaqus analysis and is then used to define an initial geometric imperfection in the numerical model.

This approach helps the numerical model better represent the initial geometric condition of the experimental specimen.

Low Cyclic Loading

After the buckling analysis, a low cyclic loading is applied to the top of the steel shear wall.

The loading history is defined according to the experimental loading protocol, and the numerical model is analyzed under repeated loading and unloading cycles.

The applied cyclic loading is used to investigate the nonlinear response of the stainless steel plate shear wall.

Hysteresis Analysis

The second stage of the project consists of the hysteresis analysis of the steel shear wall under low cyclic loading.

The force–displacement hysteresis diagram obtained from the numerical analysis is compared with the experimental results.

The numerical results show good agreement with the experimental results, demonstrating that the Abaqus model can reproduce the main characteristics of the tested steel shear wall.

Experimental Validation

This project has been validated against the experimental results reported in the reference research paper.

The validation focuses on the hysteresis response of the stainless steel plate shear wall under low cyclic loading.

The comparison between the numerical and experimental results demonstrates the capability of the Abaqus model to reproduce the structural behavior observed in the laboratory test.
