Product Overview

In this example, we intend to simulate a Low-Yield-Point Steel Shear Panel Damper under cyclic loading in the Abaqus software.

The shear panel damper is made of BLY160 low-yield-point steel. The damper dissipates energy through the inelastic deformation of the shear panel under cyclic loading.

The numerical results are compared with the experimental results reported in the reference study to evaluate the ability of the Abaqus model to reproduce the main cyclic behavior of the tested damper.

Laboratory and Abaqus Models

The Abaqus model is developed based on the geometry and experimental configuration of the low-yield-point steel shear panel damper reported in the reference study.

The numerical model reproduces the main components and boundary conditions of the experimental specimen to investigate its cyclic behavior under reversed loading.

In this project, the RT400-LS3 specimen is modeled in Abaqus based on the experimental test.

Material Properties

The shear panel is made of BLY160 low-yield-point steel, which is the main energy-dissipating material in the damper.

The BLY160 and Q235 steel material properties are defined in Abaqus according to the reference study and assigned to the corresponding parts of the model.

The material definitions allow the Abaqus model to reproduce the inelastic deformation and cyclic behavior of the shear panel under reversed cyclic loading.

Cyclic Loading

In this problem, cyclic loading is applied to the top of the Shear Panel Damper.

The loading history is defined in Abaqus using the corresponding amplitude data.

Force-Displacement Hysteresis Diagram

After applying the cyclic loading, the Force-Displacement hysteresis diagram is obtained from the Abaqus results.

As you observe in the picture, the Force-Displacement hysteresis diagram obtained from the Abaqus software is compared with the experimental results.

Validation

This project has been validated, which means that the results obtained from the Abaqus software are similar to the results reported in the reference article.

In other words, this project is based on the reference article, and the numerical model has been developed to reproduce the experimental hysteretic behavior of the low-yield-point steel shear panel damper.
