Product Overview
In this project, we simulate a double-stage yielding coupling beam damper (DYCBD) under cyclic loading in Abaqus.
The damper consists of a shear component and two bending components with I-shaped cross sections. The model also includes the connecting part, end plate, stiffeners, and plates.
The main purpose of the Abaqus model is to investigate the cyclic behavior, staged yielding, deformation, and hysteretic response of the double-stage yielding coupling beam damper.
The numerical results obtained from Abaqus are compared with the experimental results reported in the reference study to evaluate the ability of the model to reproduce the main cyclic response and yielding behavior of the damper.
Double-Stage Yielding Behavior
The main feature of the double-stage yielding coupling beam damper is its staged yielding mechanism. The shear component and the two bending components are designed with different yield displacements.
During moderate earthquake loading, the shear component yields first, while the bending components remain primarily elastic. As the displacement increases, the bending components reach their yield displacement and begin to yield, forming the second yielding stage.
This staged yielding mechanism allows the damper to provide additional energy dissipation as the displacement increases, while the shear and bending components contribute to the overall cyclic response at different stages of loading.
The Abaqus model is used to investigate the development of these two yielding stages and the corresponding deformation behavior of the shear and bending components under cyclic loading.
Cyclic Loading
In this problem, a cyclic loading is applied to the top of the model, and following that, the hysteresis diagram of the model is obtained.
The cyclic loading history is defined using the corresponding amplitude data in Abaqus.
Hysteresis Diagram
After applying the cyclic loading, the Force-Displacement hysteresis diagram is obtained from the Abaqus results.
In this picture, the hysteresis diagram obtained from the Abaqus software is compared with the experimental results.
Deformation of the Model
Under cyclic loading, the double-stage yielding coupling beam damper undergoes significant deformation as the applied displacement increases. The deformation occurs in both the shear and bending components and develops as the damper goes through the two yielding stages.
The Abaqus model is used to study how the deformation develops during cyclic loading. The results show the deformation of the different components as the applied displacement increases.
These results also help show how the shear and bending components contribute to the overall deformation of the coupling beam damper.
Comparison of Deformation Results
Under large cyclic deformations, the flanges of the bending component undergo out-of-plane deformation and buckling.
This behavior is consistent with the experimental observations reported in the reference study, where flange buckling was observed at large chord rotations.
The Abaqus model is used to capture the deformation and buckling behavior of the bending component under cyclic loading.
Validation
This project has been validated, which means that the results obtained from the Abaqus software are similar to the results reported in the article.
In other words, this project is based on the reference article, and the numerical model has been developed to reproduce the experimental behavior of the double-stage yielding coupling beam damper under cyclic loading.
