Product Overview
In this example, we intend to simulate a Metallic Box-Shaped Damper under cyclic loading in the Abaqus software.
Metallic Box-Shaped Damper
The Metallic Box-Shaped Damper (BSD) is an energy dissipation device made of steel plates and designed to act as a ductile fuse in braced frames.
The BSD consists of head plates, side plates, and connection plates that are assembled to form a box-shaped damper. The connection plates transfer the axial force from the brace to the damper.
Under tensile and compressive loading, the applied force produces flexural deformation in the damper plates. Plastic deformation develops in the plates as the load increases, allowing the BSD to dissipate seismic energy.
In this project, the experimentally tested S3 specimen of the Type A BSD is modeled in Abaqus and subjected to cyclic loading.
Laboratory and Abaqus Models
As you observe in the picture, the laboratory model is shown on the right, while the model simulated in the Abaqus software is shown on the left.
Cyclic Loading
In this problem, cyclic loading is applied to the damper to investigate its hysteretic behavior.
The loading history is defined in Abaqus using the corresponding amplitude data.
Force-Displacement Hysteresis Diagram
After applying the cyclic loading, the Force-Displacement hysteresis diagram of the model is obtained from the Abaqus results.
The hysteresis response is used to investigate the cyclic behavior, strength, deformation response, and energy dissipation of the Metallic Box-Shaped Damper.
As you observe in the picture, the Force-Displacement hysteresis diagram obtained from the Abaqus software is compared with the laboratory results.
Energy Dissipation
The Metallic Box-Shaped Damper dissipates seismic energy through the plastic deformation that develops in its steel plates during cyclic loading.
The area enclosed by the force–displacement hysteresis loops represents the energy dissipated by the damper during the loading cycles.
The Abaqus results can therefore be used to evaluate the energy dissipation capacity of the Metallic Box-Shaped Damper and compare it with the experimental response.
Deformation Under Cyclic Loading
The deformation of the damper under cyclic loading can be observed in the following picture.
Plastic Deformation
Under cyclic loading, the head plates of the Metallic Box-Shaped Damper undergo significant plastic deformation.
The numerical results show the development of a plastic hinge in the middle region of the head plates, while the side plates experience a more uniform stress distribution.
The formation of plastic deformation allows the damper to undergo large cyclic displacements and dissipate energy through inelastic deformation.
The Abaqus results are used to investigate the deformation pattern and plastic behavior of the damper during the loading cycles.
Validation
This project has been validated, which means that the results obtained from the Abaqus software are similar to the results reported in the reference article.
In other words, this project is based on the reference article, and the numerical model has been developed to reproduce the behavior of the metallic box-shaped damper under cyclic loading.
