Product Overview

In this example, we intend to simulate the quasi-static response of a fully welded steel beam-column connection under vertical loading using the Abaqus software.

The numerical model is developed based on the FAN-S specimen reported in the reference article, and the structural response is investigated through nonlinear finite element analysis.

Beam-column substructure with column loss scenario in Abaqus
Beam-column substructure modeled in Abaqus.

Model Description

The model consists of two steel beams symmetrically welded to a middle column, reproducing the experimental specimen used in the static loading test. The vertical load is applied to the top of the middle column, and the resulting structural response is evaluated in terms of the vertical displacement and load-carrying capacity of the connection.

The structural components are assembled to reproduce the experimental specimen and investigate its behavior under the column loss scenario.

Comparison of Abaqus and Experimental Results

In this picture, the Force–Displacement diagram obtained from the Abaqus software has been compared with the experimental results.

This comparison is used to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical model and its ability to reproduce the behavior of the experimental specimen.

Validation

This project has been validated, which means that the results obtained from the Abaqus software are similar to the results reported in the article.

In other words, this project is based on the reference article and the numerical model has been developed to reproduce the behavior reported in the study.
