This Abaqus tutorial is designed
to help you understand how to calculate the
maximum deflection of a beam under a point load
using the Abaqus software and
Strength of Materials.
In this training, we calculate the maximum deflection of the beam
once using the Abaqus software and once using
Strength of Materials. Finally, the results
obtained from Abaqus are compared with those obtained from
Strength of Materials.
Problem Description
In this problem, a 1000 N point load is applied
to the middle of the beam, and the resulting
deflection of the beam is calculated.
The length of the beam is 1 m, and its
cross-section is a square with a side length of
0.02 m.
The main objective of this problem is to calculate the
maximum deflection of the beam caused by the
1000 N point load and compare the results obtained from
Abaqus with those obtained from
Strength of Materials.
Beam subjected to a 1000 N point load at its middle.
Abaqus Simulation
First, the beam is modeled and analyzed using the
Abaqus software. The deflection of the beam
caused by the applied point load is obtained from the Abaqus
results.

Strength of Materials Solution
Next, the same problem is solved using the principles of
Strength of Materials. The maximum deflection
of the beam is calculated based on the applied point load,
beam length, and cross-sectional properties.
Deflection of the beam calculated using Strength of Materials.
Comparison of Results
Finally, the results obtained from the
Abaqus software are compared with those
obtained from Strength of Materials.
As observed, the results obtained from the
Abaqus software are quite equal
to those obtained from Strength of Materials.
