Product Overview
In this project, a four-story coupled steel plate shear wall is modeled in Abaqus and its behavior under cyclic loading is investigated. The numerical model is developed based on the experimental study reported in the reference paper.
In this project, the CSSHL2 specimen is simulated in Abaqus.
The Abaqus results are compared with the experimental results to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical model and its ability to reproduce the cyclic structural response reported in the reference study.
Model Description
The model represents a four-story coupled steel plate shear wall based on the configuration used in the reference experimental study.
The structural system consists of steel wall plates, coupling beams, top RBS beams, middle RBS beams, exterior columns, and interior columns. The structural components are modeled using S4R shell elements in Abaqus.
The required material properties, interactions, boundary conditions, and analysis settings are defined in Abaqus to reproduce the behavior of the experimental specimen.
Gravity Loading
A 120 kN gravity load is applied to each column at each story level, resulting in a total gravity load of 1920 kN for the four-story structure.
The gravity loading is applied before the cyclic lateral loading and is maintained throughout the subsequent analysis to represent the vertical loads acting on the structural system during the cyclic loading.
Buckling Analysis and Initial Imperfection
A buckling analysis is first performed to investigate the buckling behavior of the four-story coupled steel plate shear wall.
The buckling modes are extracted from the Abaqus analysis and are then used to define an initial geometric imperfection in the model. This approach allows the numerical model to take the initial geometric imperfections of the structural system into account before performing the nonlinear cyclic analysis.
Cyclic Loading
After the buckling analysis, the four-story coupled steel plate shear wall is subjected to cyclic loading.
The loading history is defined according to the loading protocol used in the reference experimental study. The cyclic loading is applied to the shear wall to investigate its nonlinear response under repeated loading and unloading cycles.
The loading data are also provided in an Excel file and can be used to define the Amplitude in Abaqus.
Results and Hysteresis Response
The Abaqus results are extracted and processed to evaluate the structural response of the four-story coupled steel plate shear wall under cyclic loading.
The force–drift hysteresis curve obtained from the numerical model is compared with the experimental hysteresis curve reported in the reference paper.
The comparison allows the cyclic response of the numerical model to be evaluated in terms of its overall force–drift behavior and agreement with the experimental results.
Deformation Under Cyclic Loading
The deformation behavior of the four-story coupled steel plate shear wall is investigated throughout the cyclic analysis.
The Abaqus results provide the deformation pattern of the structural system under repeated loading and show the nonlinear response of the steel plates, beams, and columns.
Validation
The numerical results are compared with the experimental results reported in the reference research paper.
The comparison focuses on the hysteresis response and the overall structural behavior under cyclic loading. The numerical results show good agreement with the experimental results, demonstrating that the Abaqus model can reproduce the main characteristics of the tested structural system.
