Project Overview
In this Abaqus tutorial, a masonry wall consisting of bricks and mortar is reinforced using FRP and analyzed to investigate the effect of the reinforcement on the behavior and failure mode of the masonry wall.
The masonry wall is modeled using the Simplified Micro Approach, while the FRP reinforcement is bonded to the brick surfaces using an adhesive interaction.
FRP-reinforced masonry wall modeled in Abaqus.
Masonry Wall Modeling
The masonry wall consists of individual bricks connected through mortar joints. The wall is modeled using the Simplified Micro Approach.
In this approach, the bricks are modeled individually, while the mechanical behavior of the mortar is represented through the interaction surfaces between adjacent bricks.
Mortar Interaction
The mortar between the bricks is defined using an Interaction Property.
The interaction property includes Cohesive Behavior and Damage Behavior to represent the mechanical response and degradation of the mortar joints.
FRP Reinforcement
The masonry wall is reinforced using FRP to improve its structural behavior and prevent the development of the rocking failure mode.
The FRP reinforcement consists of two layers, with a thickness of 0.5 mm for each layer.
FRP reinforcement applied to the masonry wall.
FRP Material Properties
The properties of the FRP reinforcement are defined using Elastic Lamina and Failure Stress.
These definitions allow the orthotropic behavior of the composite reinforcement and its failure response to be considered during the analysis.
Adhesive Interaction
An adhesive interaction is used to connect the FRP reinforcement to the brick surfaces.
The adhesive is defined using an Interaction Property that includes Cohesive Behavior and Damage Behavior.
Comparison of Masonry Walls With and Without FRP
The behavior of the masonry wall with FRP reinforcement is compared with the corresponding wall without FRP.
In the unreinforced masonry wall, a rocking failure mode develops. However, after applying FRP reinforcement, the rocking failure mode is prevented.
Comparison of masonry wall behavior with and without FRP reinforcement.
Effect of FRP on PEEQ
The equivalent plastic strain (PEEQ) is also evaluated to investigate the effect of FRP reinforcement on the nonlinear response of the masonry wall.
The results show that the equivalent plastic strain is lower in the masonry wall reinforced with FRP compared with the unreinforced wall.

Composite Failure Criteria
Several composite failure criteria are evaluated to investigate the behavior of the FRP reinforcement.
The analysis considers the Tsai-Hill, Tsai-Wu, and Azzi-Tsai-Hill failure criteria.
Tsai-Hill Failure Criterion
The Tsai-Hill failure criterion is used to evaluate the possibility of damage and failure in the FRP reinforcement.
When the Tsai-Hill quantity is lower than 1, the composite does not reach the failure criterion. When the Tsai-Hill quantity becomes greater than 1, the failure criterion is exceeded and damage or failure of the composite may occur.
Tsai-Hill failure criterion evaluated for the FRP reinforcement.
