Project Overview

In this Abaqus tutorial, the springback process of a sheet after the deep drawing process is simulated. Springback is an important phenomenon in metal forming in which the sheet slightly changes its shape after the forming operation is completed.

After the forming process, the sheet may deviate from its desired shape because of the elastic recovery of the material. In this tutorial, the springback behavior of the sheet is investigated using Abaqus.

Springback After Deep Drawing

After the completion of the deep drawing process, the sheet is released from the forming components. Due to the springback phenomenon, the sheet undergoes a slight change in its shape and may deviate from the desired geometry.

This deformation occurs because the material attempts to recover elastically after the forming constraints are removed.

Change in the sheet shape caused by the springback phenomenon.

Static Step for Springback

In this simulation, a Static Step is used to simulate the springback process. During this step, the sheet is separated from the other forming components and is allowed to deform freely.

Once the forming constraints are removed, the sheet can undergo elastic recovery, allowing the springback deformation to be observed in the Abaqus results.

Stress Contour Before and After Springback

The stress distribution of the sheet is investigated before and after the springback process. By comparing the stress contours, the change in stress distribution caused by the release of the forming constraints can be observed.

Stress contour before and after springback

Comparison of the stress contours before and after springback.

Residual Stress

Although the sheet is released from the forming components, residual stresses remain in the material after the springback process.

The residual stress distribution can be observed in the Abaqus results and provides useful information about the stress state remaining in the sheet after springback.
