Product Overview
In this project, the flush end-plate (FEP) stainless steel beam-to-column bolted connection is modeled using the Abaqus software.
The numerical model is based on the FEP connection investigated experimentally in the reference study. The connection consists of a stainless steel beam and column connected using a flush end plate and bolts.
A monotonic load is applied to the end of the beam, and the nonlinear structural response of the connection is investigated. The moment–rotation response obtained from the Abaqus analysis is compared with the experimental results reported in the reference study.
Model Description
The connection consists of a stainless steel beam, column, flush end plate, and bolts. The beam is connected to the end plate by welding, while the end plate is connected to the column using 6 bolts.
Monotonic Loading
A monotonic displacement-controlled loading is applied to the end of the beam to investigate the nonlinear behavior of the FEP beam-to-column connection.
The applied load increases progressively, allowing the response of the connection to be investigated throughout the analysis.
Moment–Rotation Diagram
The moment and rotation values are extracted from the Abaqus results and used to obtain the moment–rotation diagram of the connection.
The numerical response obtained from Abaqus is then compared with the experimental results reported in the reference research paper.
Deformation of the Model
Under monotonic loading, significant plastic deformation develops in the end plate of the FEP connection.
The analysis also shows noticeable bending of the column flange as the applied displacement increases.
Validation
This project has been validated by comparing the results obtained from Abaqus with the experimental results reported in the reference article.
The good agreement between the numerical and experimental results demonstrates that the Abaqus model can reproduce the behavior of the tested beam-to-column connection.
