Product Overview
In this project, an Elliptical Reduced Web Section (E-RWS) welded moment connection is modeled in Abaqus and its nonlinear behavior under cyclic loading is investigated.
The connection uses an elliptical opening in the beam web to create a reduced region and shift the inelastic deformation away from the column face. This configuration is studied as an alternative to the conventional radial-cut Reduced Beam Section (R-RBS) connection, with particular attention to cyclic behavior and lateral-torsional stability.
The numerical model is developed based on the experimental study reported in the reference research paper. The Abaqus results are compared with the experimental results to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical model.
Model Description
The model represents a Reduced Web Section (RWS) beam-to-column connection with an elliptical opening.
The model consists of an IPE270 beam and an IPB200 column. An elliptical opening is introduced in the beam web to create the reduced region. The connection configuration also includes the structural components used in the experimental specimen, including doubler web plates, continuity plates, and beam stiffeners.
The required material properties, interactions, boundary conditions, loading procedure, and analysis settings are defined in Abaqus to reproduce the behavior of the experimental connection.
Cyclic Loading
The E-RWS connection is subjected to displacement-controlled cyclic loading to investigate its seismic behavior under repeated loading and unloading cycles.
The loading history is defined using the Amplitude option in Abaqus. The connection is then analyzed under repeated loading and unloading cycles.
The force and displacement response of the connection are recorded throughout the nonlinear analysis.
Hysteresis Response
The Abaqus results are extracted and processed to obtain the moment–rotation hysteresis response of the connection.
The results also allow the strength and stiffness degradation of the connection to be evaluated as the rotation increases. The observed degradation is associated with the development of local buckling and increasing inelastic deformation in the reduced region.
Experimental Validation
The numerical results obtained from Abaqus are compared with the experimental results reported in the reference research paper.
The comparison focuses on the moment–rotation hysteresis response and the overall structural behavior of the connection under cyclic loading.
The numerical model is developed based on the experimental study, allowing the Abaqus results to be evaluated against the laboratory results.
Deformation and Buckling Behavior
The Abaqus results show that the inelastic deformation of the E-RWS connection is concentrated within the reduced region of the beam. The elliptical opening helps shift the critical deformation away from the beam-to-column joint, reducing the concentration of deformation near the column face.
As the cyclic loading increases, local buckling develops in the beam flange within the reduced region. With further loading, the deformation extends to the beam web, resulting in increased local buckling of both the flange and web.
An important feature of the E-RWS connection is that the local buckling and inelastic deformation remain concentrated in the intended reduced region, while significant deformation does not develop near the beam-to-column joint. This behavior helps protect the connection region while allowing the reduced beam section to accommodate the inelastic response.
The results also show limited lateral-torsional deformation compared with the conventional radial-cut reduced beam section. The E-RWS configuration therefore provides improved stability against excessive out-of-plane deformation during cyclic loading.
