In this project, the seismic behavior of a Reduced Web Section (RWS) connection with an elliptical opening is investigated using Abaqus under cyclic loading.

The numerical model is developed based on the experimental study reported in the reference research paper. The Abaqus results are compared with the experimental results to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical model.

Model Description

The model represents a Reduced Web Section (RWS) beam-to-column connection with an elliptical opening.

The beam web is modified by creating an elliptical opening in the reduced section. The geometry of the connection is defined according to the configuration of the experimental specimen reported in the reference paper.

The required material properties, interactions, boundary conditions, loading procedure, and analysis settings are defined in Abaqus to reproduce the behavior of the experimental connection.

Connection Details

The connection is designed with a reduced web section containing an elliptical opening. This configuration modifies the distribution of stresses and deformation in the beam near the connection region.

The geometry and dimensions of the opening are defined according to the experimental specimen used in the reference study.

Cyclic Loading

The connection is subjected to cyclic loading to investigate its seismic behavior.

The loading history is defined using the Amplitude option in Abaqus. The connection is then analyzed under repeated loading and unloading cycles.

The force and displacement response of the connection are recorded throughout the nonlinear analysis.

Hysteresis Response

The Abaqus results are extracted and processed to obtain the force–displacement hysteresis response of the connection.

The hysteresis curve is used to evaluate the behavior of the RWS connection during cyclic loading and to compare the numerical response with the experimental response.

Experimental Validation

The numerical results obtained from Abaqus are compared with the experimental results reported in the reference research paper.
