Product Overview
In this example, we intend to simulate a carbon steel slit damper under cyclic loading in the Abaqus software.
In the right picture, the laboratory model and in the left picture, the model simulated in the Abaqus software can be observed.
In this project, the slit damper is the CS1D-G2 specimen, which is made of SS275 carbon steel. The specimen has a nominal thickness of 12 mm, a measured strut width of approximately 40.81 mm, and six steel strips.
Slit Damper
A steel slit damper is an energy dissipation device used in seismic-resistant structures. Its steel strips undergo repeated deformation under cyclic loading to dissipate energy.
In this project, the damper is made of SS275 carbon steel, and its cyclic behavior is investigated through numerical simulation and comparison with experimental results.
Cyclic Loading
A cyclic loading is applied to the top of the damper to investigate its behavior under repeated loading cycles.
The loading history is defined in Abaqus using an amplitude curve, allowing the prescribed displacement to be applied according to the experimental loading protocol.
The response of the damper is recorded throughout the loading cycles and used to evaluate its cyclic behavior and energy dissipation.
Energy Dissipation
One of the main functions of a slit damper is to dissipate energy through the repeated plastic deformation of its steel strips during cyclic loading.
The force–displacement hysteresis response obtained from Abaqus can be used to evaluate the energy dissipated by the damper during the loading cycles.
Comparison of Abaqus and Laboratory Results
The force–displacement hysteresis response obtained from Abaqus is compared with the laboratory results reported in the reference study.
The hysteresis response is used to evaluate the damper's strength, deformation behavior, and energy dissipation during repeated loading cycles.
This comparison is used to evaluate how well the numerical model reproduces the experimental behavior of the carbon steel slit damper under cyclic loading.
Validation
This project has been validated, which means that the results obtained from the Abaqus software are similar to the results reported in the article.
In other words, this project is based on the reference article and the numerical model has been developed to reproduce the behavior of the carbon steel slit damper under cyclic loading.
