Product Overview
In this project, a steel plate shear wall with two rectangular openings is modeled in Abaqus and its behavior under cyclic loading is investigated.
The numerical model is developed based on an experimental study reported in the reference paper. The Abaqus results are compared with the laboratory results to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical model and its ability to reproduce the structural response observed in the experiment.
In this project, the SSW2O1 specimen is simulated in Abaqus.
Model Description
The model represents a steel plate shear wall with two rectangular openings based on the configuration of the experimental specimen reported in the reference study.
The numerical model includes the steel plate, surrounding frame members, stiffeners, and box frames around the openings. The geometry and material properties of the structural components are defined according to the experimental configuration.
The required interactions, boundary conditions, and analysis settings are defined in Abaqus to reproduce the structural response of the experimental specimen under cyclic loading.
Experimental Test Setup
The numerical model is based on the experimental specimen and test configuration reported in the reference research paper.
The distance between the centerlines of the columns is 1500 mm, while the inner height of the surrounding frame is 960 mm. The two rectangular openings have an internal height of 488 mm and an internal width of 258 mm.
Laboratory Model
This figure shows the laboratory model used in the experimental study.
Stiffeners are installed on the infill steel plate, dividing it into several sub-panels. The sub-panel located between the two openings is referred to as the middle panel, while the sub-panels located between the openings and the columns are referred to as the lateral panels.
Buckling Analysis and Initial Imperfection
The first part of the analysis consists of a buckling analysis of the steel plate shear wall.
The buckling modes are extracted from the Abaqus analysis and are subsequently used to define the initial geometric imperfection of the model.
Introducing the initial imperfection helps the numerical model better represent the initial geometric condition of the experimental specimen.
Cyclic Loading
After the buckling analysis, cyclic loading is applied to the top beam of the steel plate shear wall.
The loading history is defined according to the experimental loading protocol, and the model is analyzed under repeated loading and unloading cycles.
The cyclic loading is used to investigate the nonlinear structural response of the steel plate shear wall with two rectangular openings.
Hysteresis Analysis
The second part of the project consists of the hysteresis analysis of the model under cyclic loading.
The force and displacement data obtained from the Abaqus analysis are extracted and processed to generate the force–displacement hysteresis diagram.
The numerical hysteresis response is then compared with the laboratory results reported in the reference paper.
Experimental Validation
This project has been validated against the experimental results reported in the reference research paper.
The validation focuses on the hysteresis response of the steel plate shear wall with two rectangular openings under cyclic loading.
The numerical results obtained from Abaqus show good agreement with the laboratory results reported in the reference study.
