This Abaqus tutorial is designed
to help you understand how to calculate the
change in length of a conical rod due to an axial force
using the Abaqus software and
Strength of Materials.
In this training, we first solve the problem using the
Abaqus software. Then, the same problem is solved
using the Strength of Materials formula. Finally,
the results obtained from Abaqus are compared with those obtained
from Strength of Materials.
Problem Description
In this problem, a conical rod with a length of
300 mm is subjected to an axial force of
20 kN.
The main objective of this problem is to calculate the
displacement of point B, which represents the
change in length of the rod, using both
Abaqus and the Strength of Materials
formula.
Conical rod subjected to an axial force.
Abaqus Simulation
First, the conical rod is modeled and analyzed using the
Abaqus software. The displacement of
point B is obtained from the Abaqus results.
Displacement of point B obtained using Abaqus.
Strength of Materials Solution
Next, the same problem is solved using the
Strength of Materials formula. The change in
length of the conical rod is calculated based on the axial force
acting on the rod.
Displacement of point B obtained using Strength of Materials.
Comparison of Results
Finally, the results obtained from the
Abaqus software and the
Strength of Materials are compared.
As observed from the results, the results obtained from the
Abaqus software are quite equal
to those obtained from the Strength of Materials.
