Project Overview

This Abaqus tutorial is designed to help you understand how to calculate the change in length of a rod due to an axial force using the Abaqus software and Strength of Materials.

In this training, we simulate a simple example related to Strength of Materials using the Abaqus software. The results obtained from Abaqus are then compared with the results obtained using the principles of Strength of Materials.

Problem Description

In this problem, a steel bar with a length of 2 meters is connected to an aluminum bar with a length of 1 meter.

A force equal to 15 kN is applied to the middle of the steel bar.

As shown in the model, the bar is composed of three segments: two segments are made of steel and one segment is made of aluminum.

Objective of the Problem

The purpose of this problem is to calculate the displacement of points B and C using both the Abaqus software and Strength of Materials.

The results obtained from Abaqus are then compared with those obtained from the Strength of Materials.

Abaqus Simulation

First, the model is created and analyzed using the Abaqus software. The displacement of point B is obtained from the Abaqus results.

The displacement of point C is also calculated from the Abaqus analysis.

Strength of Materials

The same problem is solved using the principles of Strength of Materials. The displacements of points B and C are calculated based on the axial deformation of the different segments of the bar.

Comparison of Results

Finally, the results obtained from the Abaqus software are compared with those obtained from Strength of Materials.

As observed from the results, the results obtained from the Abaqus software are quite equal to those obtained from Strength of Materials.
