Product Overview

In this example, we intend to simulate the hysteretic performance of a brace-type damper consisting of two slit dampers and one brace in the Abaqus software.

The numerical model is developed based on the experimental study, and the behavior of the damper under cyclic loading is investigated.

Test Setup

The test setup used for the experimental study can be observed in the following picture.

Cyclic Loading

In this problem, a cyclic loading is applied to the model, and following that, its hysteresis diagram is obtained.

The cyclic loading history is defined using the corresponding amplitude data in Abaqus.

Hysteresis Diagram

After applying the cyclic loading, the Force-Displacement hysteresis diagram is obtained from the Abaqus results.

Deformation of the Model

The deformation of the model under cyclic loading can be observed in the following picture.

In this picture, the deformation obtained from the Abaqus software is compared with the experimental results.

The comparison is used to evaluate the ability of the numerical model to reproduce the deformation behavior observed during the experimental test.

Mesh Size

The mesh used in the numerical model can be observed in the following picture.

It should be noted that fine meshes should be used for the slit dampers in order to accurately capture their deformation and hysteretic behavior.

Validation

This project has been validated, which means that the results obtained from the Abaqus software are similar to the results reported in the article.
