Product Overview

In this project, a steel plate shear wall connected to beams only is modeled in Abaqus and its behavior under cyclic loading is investigated.

The numerical model consists of a steel plate, beams, columns, and stiffening boxes. Unlike conventional steel plate shear wall models, the steel plate is connected only to the beams and has no connection to the columns.

The Abaqus results are compared with the experimental results reported in the reference article to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical model.

Model Description

The model consists of a steel plate, beams, columns, and stiffening boxes. The structural configuration is developed according to the experimental model reported in the reference article.

A particular feature of this model is that the steel plate is connected only to the beams. There is no connection between the steel plate and the columns.

The beams and columns are connected using hinges at the specified locations of the structural frame.

Beam-to-Column Connections

The beams and columns are connected using hinge connections. The hinge locations are defined according to the configuration of the experimental specimen.

This connection configuration allows the numerical model to reproduce the structural behavior of the experimental frame under cyclic loading.

Steel Plate Connection

The steel plate is connected only to the beams and is not connected to the columns.

This connection configuration is an important feature of the model and is considered in the numerical simulation to reproduce the experimental structural system.

Buckling Analysis and Initial Imperfection

The first part of the project consists of a buckling analysis.

The buckling modes are extracted from the Abaqus analysis and are then used to define the initial geometric imperfection of the steel plate shear wall.

Introducing an initial imperfection based on the buckling mode helps the numerical model better represent the initial geometric condition of the experimental specimen.

Cyclic Loading

After the buckling analysis, cyclic loading is applied to the top of the model.

The loading history is defined according to the experimental loading protocol. The structure is subjected to repeated loading and unloading cycles to investigate its nonlinear response.

Deformation Under Cyclic Loading

During cyclic loading, the steel plate develops progressive out-of-plane deformation and buckling waves. The numerical deformation patterns obtained from Abaqus reproduce the main deformation characteristics observed in the experimental specimens.

After buckling, tension field action gradually develops in the steel plate as the lateral deformation increases. The tension field expands along the diagonal direction and contributes to the post-buckling load-carrying mechanism.

Hysteresis Analysis

The second part of the project consists of the hysteresis analysis.

The force and displacement data obtained from the Abaqus analysis are extracted and processed to generate the force–displacement hysteresis diagram.

The numerical hysteresis response is then compared with the experimental results reported in the reference article.

Experimental Validation

This project has been validated against the experimental results reported in the reference article.

The numerical results obtained from Abaqus show similar behavior to the experimental results, demonstrating the ability of the model to reproduce the main structural response of the tested specimen.
