Product Overview
In this project, a trapezoidally corrugated steel shear wall is modeled in Abaqus and its behavior under cyclic loading is investigated.
The model includes the corrugated steel panel, top and bottom beams, two columns, and stiffener. The geometry and material properties are defined according to the experimental specimen, and the connections between the shear panel and surrounding frame are modeled in Abaqus.
The model is used to investigate the structural response of the vertically corrugated shear wall under cyclic in-plane loading and to reproduce the main deformation and failure behavior observed in the experiment.
Model Description
The numerical model represents Specimen No. 2 from the reference experimental study, which consists of a vertically corrugated steel shear panel surrounded by a steel boundary frame.
The geometry, material properties, interactions, boundary conditions, and analysis settings are defined in Abaqus to reproduce the behavior of the experimental specimen.
Buckling Analysis and Initial Imperfection
The analysis consists of two main parts: buckling analysis and hysteresis analysis.
First, a buckling analysis is performed to determine the buckling modes of the steel shear wall.
The obtained buckling modes are then used to define an initial geometric imperfection in the model. This approach helps the numerical model better represent the initial imperfections of the experimental specimen.
Cyclic Loading
The model is subjected to displacement-controlled cyclic loading at the top of the shear wall, following the loading protocol used in the experimental study.
The loading history is defined using the Amplitude option in Abaqus. The structure is then subjected to repeated loading and unloading cycles.
The resulting force–displacement response is used to obtain the hysteresis diagram of the steel shear wall.
Deformation and Structural Response
With increasing cyclic loading, a diagonal tension field develops across the corrugated steel panel, with an angle of approximately 60° to the horizontal.
At larger displacement levels, plastic hinges develop in the beams and columns of the boundary frame, indicating the development of significant inelastic deformation in the structural system.
Results and Hysteresis Response
The force–displacement hysteresis diagram obtained from the Abaqus analysis is compared with the experimental results reported in the reference article.
The hysteresis response shows stable cyclic behavior with gradual stiffness degradation as the displacement increases. The corrugated shear wall also exhibits significant deformation and energy dissipation during the cyclic loading history.
Experimental Validation
The numerical results obtained from Abaqus are compared with the experimental results reported in the reference research article.
The comparison focuses on the hysteresis response and overall structural behavior of the trapezoidally corrugated steel shear wall under cyclic loading.
The Abaqus results show good agreement with the experimental results, demonstrating that the developed numerical model can reproduce the behavior of the tested specimen.
